SCL (Student Centered Learning)
The
world has change and it means to be ready to succeed in the future has also
change. That means our model of learning must change. Like remodeling a house,
we have to strengthening what works and fixing what doesn’t. that is why we
need a new way of teaching and learning. For example, we can use student
centered learning model.
What
is student centered learning?
Is
an instructional approach that places focus on the students, instead of the
teacher. Its missions is to create independent and responsible learners for the
feature. SCL is a modern way of teaching where the role of the students is
deemed to be very critical in constructing their own understanding from new
information and prior experiences.
Why
is student centered learning?
There
are many positive benefits that using a student centered learning model.
Research has shown that students learn how express themselves and articulate
their individual ideas. This learning environment allows students to be more
engaged in their education and allow them to express their interest.
How
is student centered learning?
There is 4 key principles for student centered learning:
- Learning is personalized. Students are fully embraced for who they are, in the context of their communities and cultures, and feel that they belong. They develop a positive sense of their own identities, including elements such as race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation and see those identities reflected at school.
- Learning is competency based. Students advance by demonstrating mastery of clearly articulated learning objectives, rather than by age, receiving extra support when they struggle and new challenges when they’re ready to move on.
- Learning happens anytime, anywhere. Students have flexibility in when and where they learn within the school, as well as places outside of school (at home, out in community, at local businesses, etc.) and times beyond the typical school day and year.
- Students take ownership. Students take responsibility for their learning, exercising choice to pursue their interests and passions, and agency to shape their school environment. Teachers serve increasingly as facilitators and guides.
